The lonely bird and I

Yes! A second post in the same day! Actually, that depends if you consider 3:09 AM the same day or the next day… but anyways, these couldn’t wait! The photo above was taken at a 15 second exposure (click to see larger version if you’re on my blog, not the newsletter)… during which my main subject, Mr. Birdy at the edge of the pier behaved and didn’t move a muscle!

Anyways, personally, I love the shot. Maybe some of you will find it totally boring…. but that’s your problem! The orange background is actually some docking stations and if you look closely you might actually see these loading cranes up and around…

Anyways, I kinda forgot to introduce what was going on. As most of you probably know, I have recently purchased a tripod… and decided to make use of it over here in Miami, hence the uncharacteristic long exposure shots.

This shot was taken about 5 minutes walk away from my apartment building. What I find funky about this shot is that it appears that there;s massive distortion going on in the lower portion of the image but I assure you thats simply a randomly lit green slope that I decided to integrate into the picture. =)

DT Miami

Next up on the list of shots is a self portrait of myself posing in a very relaxed position for a full 30 seconds! Note how lonely I am with all the empty chairs beside me….

Self Portrait

From there, I followed a fantastic path of gorgeous palm trees (yet another 30 second exposure)…

Palmwind

Until I hit this mural. Ok, 1, 2, 3… awwwww… *barf* !

Still thinking of you

And although I’d love to end this blog post here with a cute *good night*, truth is I have one more shot I found somewhat interesting in my little outing. I’m not sure what you guys will think of it…. but I find it a somewhat unique blend between the Modern Miami architecture and the cliche’ed classic Miami “tourism” image:

Well, after 15 months of photography, I have finally went out to purchase myself a respectable Manfrotto Tripod.

To be honest, I’ve never been much of a tripod person but recently I’ve began to realize that not having one was beginning to limit some photos that I wanted to do.

Here are the results from a couple little experiments, I hope you enjoy them.

I have been participating regularly at a local monthly photo competition hosted by Tyler Ye.

I have found that participating in such activities forces myself to exceed expectations to try and find new and creative ideas around a given theme. This particular competition was “Unconventional Light Sources” and a photo I took randomly in Toronto turned out as the winning shot, yay! First win ever!

Beneath the Mask

There was actually a reasonably large amount of post processing that was added (vignet, yellow/golden hues on the metal) but it seems like people liked the symetry and futuristic feel of the image! What do you think?

I recently watched a video on Chase Jarvis’s website about making the web work for you. The video’s an hour long and features David Hobby from Strobist and David J. Nightingale from Chromasia.

Essentially, what I retained from it was that I should focus on beginning and maintaining a blog in order to share with the world my experience, knowledge and learning. Problem is though, that I do not consider myself anywhere close to being good enough to teach and educate anything so after giving it a bit of thought, perhaps I could share my journey with those who wish to read.

Hopefully I’m able to keep this up at a rate of approximately a post every two days!

That being said, i better post a photo before I bore you:

Arches of Light

Architectural Shot somewhere in downtown Toronto (if someone knows exactly where this is, please do tell!) . Update: looks like this is a shot of BCE Place in Toronto, unless there’s been a name change! Info courtesy of Allie, thanks! Shot this last weekend as a HDR.  Colors and shadows were enhanced in post processing. Architechture isn’t really something I do regularly, but I think this shot was actually somewhat interesting.
