NEVER ACCEPT CANDY FROM STRANGERS

Here is a photo I forgot to upload yesterday. Somehow, this odd shot just struck me as something that would fit right in with a childhood educational poster… with a twist.

Hope it brightens up your Wednesday!

For those who are too lazy to read the entire blog post, you can see all the photos HERE or by clicking on the photo above. I recommend that you DISABLE “Embiggen Small Items” in the option tool bar because the shots will look like crap otherwise.

For the general populace (between the ages of say… 0~14 and then 30~R.I.P), the St-Patrick’s parade is a cultural heritage, a tradition, a family outing or perhaps simply a free show. For the rest however, St-Paddie’s is THE perfect excuse to get drunk a beautiful sunday morning.

The reason I said 14 instead of a more traditionally acceptable 18 years old is because of these shocking (at least it is for me) way-too-young kids:

Anyways, I’m getting sidetracked.

Drunk people aside, the parade was actually pretty neat. I actually arrived at the parade a good two hours ahead of time and had the chance to go in the “back-street” of Rene Levesque to take a couple shots. Things were somewhat interesting ranging from laughing horses, arabs with drums and army dudes with hummers: Continue reading ‘The St-Patrick’s Riot uh… I mean parade.’ »

Together, on top of the world

I brought Anna to the St-Joseph Oratory after an event I had to cover. Despite the freezing temperatures (I think it was like -10 with windchill or something), I took the time to set up my Tripod (much more carefully than before though!) and prepared this shot.

It was a 30 second exposure at F16 with an SB-800 triggering on camera  in Rear-Sync mode. The reason why we’re both slightly transparent is that the camera recorded approximately 5 seconds before we had time to scurry into position. And we’re not sure but that thinggy accross the sky looks like a shooting star!

~ As I rush through the shadows

Seeking me

May the torch of love

Light my way

“Shadows of Society” by The Supremes

Shot taken yesterday afternoon while waiting for the bus to come take me home from work. After unsuccessfully taking photos of the streets, the people, and the cars passing by, I noticed randomly that it would be pretty cool to have the sun light up a street lamp. The clouds were perfectly aligned to resemble a torch (and perhaps a hand holding it?) – The first shot (this one) came out the best.

I have a secret to tell you

Thinking back on the moments we had together ~

That’s what this shot makes me think when I look at it. A man, thinking of the past.

Although I’d like to say that this shot was 100% pre-thought out, this was actually the only “mistake” among the series of photos Anna and I took together Friday afternoon, I think it came out to be the most interesting one.

The original shot, was supposed to look something like this, w here we were trying to make a heart with our chest, necks and lips… It didn’t quite work out:

Can u see the love?

The reason why the shots are semi-blurred is that all this was done using the natural sunlight shinning through the window so we didn’t have that really strong harsh light for clear defined shadows.  The camera was mounted on a tripod that was on top of Anna’s bed which was then set to Interval Timer mode where we had 10 seconds between a series of 9 shots to pose.

Nothing too technical, nothing too fantastic and probably far too cheezy. All in all, a relaxing shoot filled with cheese.

One year later

1 year and 6 days before today, I was standing at the exact same spot in very different circumstances.

I was:

  • Still in University
  • A year younger
  • Still single
  • and extremely immature. Wait, that hasn’t changed.

1 year and 6 days before today, I went down to the Law building to meet up with Anna to help give her a massage to the left side of her her neck because she couldn’t turn left; her skills as an ambiturner had been stolen! It was after this, that we went downstairs to randomly doodle and draw. She introduced me to the Cloud Brick, which you can see in the lower right side of the drawing among, and generally exposed me to a completely new world of random abstractcities. 2 days later, we started dating.

Fastforward 6 months, we came back to the same place, added a couple stuff  ”Happy A & B” among others and left it.

Fastforward 12 months and 6 days, our love is still there.

What does the future hold?

With this in mind, I headed home (the same day  my camera fell off the tripod), and saw a couple lovingly holding each other and looking deep into each other eyes. Equipped with my tiny 50mm f1.8, I fired off a couple shots hoping to catch the moment.

I don’t think it’s too hard to imagine what they’re expressions were =)

I'll never let go

Heh,

This shoot was one of the coldest shoots I had ever done.

My parents decided to take my sister and I on a small family vacation to relax in Ottawa. Knowing full well that there was an outdoor pool, I had already planned on taking some unique photographs using my sister as a model.

We started out taking a couple shots in the daytime, but soon realized that my flash’s were not nearly powerful enough to create anything interesting (or either that, my knowledge of them were simply not sufficient). Waiting until late evening, we gave the shoot another try!

This was more or less the shooting layout:
- dad on the right, holding an umbrella and sb-600 to light the steam rising from the water and my freezing sister.
- mom on the left, holding a snoot and sb-600 to light up her face
- me, shooting from accross the pool and an sb-800 providing a tweensy bit of fill light.
The result?

A touch of the Sun

Yay! My family’s so awesome.

Well, I guess this is my first official blog post (on this website anyways), and I’ll probably be editing/updating this on a regular basis to showcase a bit of photography that I do that isn’t professional.

Recently, I purchased a set of flashes, lighstands and umbrellas and have been happily experimenting with them.

I was lucky to stumble in on my sister having the time of her life painting henna on one of her friends the day I purchased these (back in december) and using an open door as a black backdrop.

My favorite shots would be the two on the edges because I think they are the most expressive, but I also wanted to illustrate the fact that lighting had a lot to do with it, which is why I decided to throw in a somewhat normal (but edgy) portrait.

Thanks for looking,

Ben
